GEOGRAPHY of India
• India is a subcontinent
– a subcontinent is a large land mass
that sticks out of a continent
• 3 major bodies of water surround it:
– East is the Bay of Bengal
– South is the Indian Ocean
– West is the Arabian Sea
• In the northern borders are 2 mountain regions:
– Northeast are the Himalayas
- "him"= snow and "-aalaya" = home
– Farther up north is the Hindu Kush
• The Deccan Plateau takes up central India
– a plateau is a raised area of level land
• India also experiences monsoons
– monsoons are seasonal winds that regularly blow from a certain direction for part of the year
