Expectations of the Family During the Death:

The expectations of the family during a death consists of a lot of praying (if they are religious) and mostly being there and comforting eachother. Buddhism Shintoism is very common among families in Japan. So the families will commonly pray to their God Buddha for a safe journey for the person in to the afterlife

Another side however, in more strict households, if the current successor is the one who is in their death bed, the next in line eldest son has to prepare to take over the family household. There is still mourning and praying occurring, but as well as great preparation. Most likely, the son has been preparing for this his whole life, but it suddenly gets more intense when they are assured that the successor is not to live. This can happen to the son at ages early as 16.
