What is a domus?

A domus is a house that mostly the

upper class and wealthy Romans occupied. This house

had many rooms and was usually just one story in height.

Domuses can be found in almost all major cities throughout Roman territories. Along with a domus, some wealthy Roman families also owned a large country house called a villa.

A domus included a variety of different rooms, multiple gardens and garden rooms, and stunningly painted walls throughout the building.

Here are some examples of the many rooms you may find in a Roman domus.
