German Role in the Armenian Genocide
Germany had a very close relationship with Turkey during WWI
➡️Germany didn't contribute to the genocide but had policies that condoned it
➡️Germany had a willingness to embrace Turkey's genocidal tactics
➡️Kaiser Wilhelm II had a tolerance for Turkey's anti-Armenian policies which influenced German and Turkish relations
➡️General Bronsart Von Schellendorf issued deportation orders and demanded that severe measures be used against the Armenians
➡️Major Eberhard Wolffs- keel singlehandedly killed the Armenian section Ulfra which was home to 25,000 Armenians when Turkey was unable to take the barricades set up by Armenians to avoid deportation.
➡️There were some who objected towards the genocide and tried to report it but were ignored and reprimanded.
➡️German military officers even helped members of the Young Turks escapes Turkey into Germany after the war.
▶️These actions of Germany paved the way to the Holocaust during WWII
➡️They responded nonchalantly to the massacres of the 1890's
➡️This signaled to the Turks that Germany didn't testify towards the purge of its Armenian population
➡️This lead towards a nonintervention during the Armenian genocide because they needed the trust of their ally during WWI
➡️They worked to cover up the genocide and lower suspicion of their involvement
➡️They also created a book that blamed the Armenians for the actions of the Turkish
➡️Germany helped finance the genocide and help with deportations
