The asylum/prison reform was the reformation of hospitals for the mentally ill and evolution of prisons. Before the reform, the mentally ill were confined in cages, closets, cellars, stalls, and pens and were chained, beaten with rods, and lashed into obedience. Prisons overflowed with criminals of all classification, and in some places, the criminals and mentally ill would be put into the same place.
