permanent wave procedure & set up

Sectioning

1. Section the hair while it is still wet.

2. Create a section down the middle of the head from the hairline to the nape of the neck. Make section slightly narrower than the length of the perm rod.

3. If guest's hair is long, separate this section into thirds.

4. Secure the right and left sections.

Blocking

1. Provide even moisture by spraying the entire section with water. Must be kept evenly moist to maintain even tension during wrapping.

2. Stand behind the guest & start at front hairline. Use tail of plastic tail comb & take a horizontal subsection or "blocking" that is the diameter of the rod you are using.

3. Blocking size may be adjusted based on density, texture or length of the hair.

End Paper Application

1. Comb the blocking from the scalp through the ends so it is smooth. Comb both the top & underside of the blocking.

2. Begin wrapping by holding blocking at the appropriate elevation from the head. Spread hair out while sliding it between the index & middle fingers of your subordinate hand.

3. Place first end wrap about midlength at the front of the blocking.

4. Still holding hair & end wrap, place another wrap on underside of hair.

5. Secure end wraps with middle & index finger of dominant hand. Slide the end wraps together up to the ends of the hair.

Wrapping

1. Pick up a rod (WITHOUT LETTING GO OF THE COMB) with the fastener on the side of dominant hand.

2. Place rod on underside at the top of the end wrap.

3. Roll hair under rod, toward the base. Maintain even tension & proper elevation. DO NOT BEND or "FISH HOOK" THE ENDS OF THE HAIR OVER THE ROD. Keep them straight & smooth.

4. Keep hair evenly distributed so it follows contour of rod. Secure the fastener across the top of the rod.

5. Repeat this procedure for the next blocking.

Placing Picks

1. Roller picks are used to avoid creases, especially when hair is softened by the chemicals during a permanent wave service.

2. Place picks OFF the hair, on the outer edge of the rod.

3. Place two picks between the bands of every two rods. Gently life the band & slide the pick under it.
