Martin Van Buren (contd.)

Panic of 1837- Andrew Jackson closed the National bank towards the end of his presidency. There was no regulation on loans, which made the value of money decrease, and caused inflation. Everyone blamed Van Buren, although it was Jackson's fault.

Annexation of Texas- Van Buren often showed how much he opposed the expansion of slavery, so he didn't like the idea of Texas joining the Union. Since Texas was in the South, he knew they would want slaves, so he didn't let them join the Union.
