Crispus was the first to die for American Independence. He was a slave in Massachusetts until he ran away and became a sailor. He was there at the Boston Massacre and was the first to be shot. Three days later, the five people that died that day were placed in the family tomb of Samuel Adams. Crispus was celebrated in a poem as being "the first to defy, and the first to die."
