Thomas Paine
Declaration of Independence
Thomas Jefferson was the main author of the Declaration of Independence. He wrote of unalienable rights. That meant that all people were born with the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In late June, Jefferson completed the declaration. After the delegates decided what parts of the declaration they wanted to keep, the document was adopted on June 4, 1776. John Hancock was the first to sign, and he wrote his name in large, clear letters.
