Power back in the day gave people authority and respect. Power changed the dynamics that were present in relationships between people. For example the power between a slave and the slave owner was different than the power in a relationship between a slave and a slave. When the slaves from Africa migrated into the Americas and Europe the slave owners completely dehumanized the slaves so that they wouldn’t feel as if they were hurting a human being or one who had the right to be treated rightly. This power in the slave and slave owner relationship can be compared to one between the slave owner and his prized animal for instance. His prized animal is valued and treated with respect because the owner feels as if it deserves that respect but because to the slave owners the slaves were just property and servants they could throw around they didn’t feel as if they had to be properly treated. In a relationship between a laborer and employer the employer enforces his power onto the laborer which is what the slave owners do to the slaves.
