Seizure of the Liberty
June, 1768
British agents seized the Liberty, a ship of John Hancock, a local merchant, because of smuggling wine. This caused the colonists to go ballistic and triggered riots against custom agents. The British had to crack down again on Massachusetts and send 2,000 troops to Boston.
