Sugar Act
1764
The Sugar Act reduced the import tax on sugar, molasses and imposed duties on other items such as indigo, wine, coffee, etc. Colonists who violated this act would be tried in a royal court. British thought this act was necessary because they had just paid for the war and wanted to crack down on smuggling but the colonists were mad, boycotted goods, continued smuggling and sometimes bribed the trade officials.
