The Dancing Couple
Jan Steen, oil on canvas, 1663, currently on display in the NGA
Analysis: The artist places the man dancing with his foot up. The artist places clouds in the background/ in the opening (window). The artist also drew a man standing on a ledge with a violin. The artist casts shadows in the front and put darker colors in the front to draw your eye to the window in the back, which is light blue.
Interpretation: I think that the artist placed the man with his foot up to show the man is moving, or dancing and he placed the clouds in the back to show movement of the clouds. They places a man up higher than the rest playing a violin so you can they'll there'd is music being played. And they used dark colors in the front so you would be more focused on the window and who is in front of the window.
Judgement: I do feel drawn to the subject because it creates so much movement and make you feel as if you are actually there. I think it is very interesting and ethyl did display it nicely, it is very clean to see and look at and tells a good story.
