People in the war died by fighting in battle on land or at sea, also by diseases such as, typhoid, pneumonia or tuberculosis, and starvation and disease obtained as a war prisoner.

Because coping the loss of a father, husband or son was very difficult, mothers had to support their families while mourning, but some could not take being without a husband and fled for a better life elsewhere.

There were many changes in mourning traditions during the civil war, mourning became somewhat of an art form because it was so central during that time period. Graveyards were flourished with flowers and plants. Mourners wore all black, including veils and under garments.
