Religion~
Education became a necessity for those in the North. They enforced it because, the African Americans wanted all people to understand what slavery was and what they were freed from. Although public schools were an option for colored people, some wanted to excel even more. They created a college for African Americans, Cheyney, Lincoln University, and Wilberforce.
Christianity was a big part of the religion during the late 1600's. Supporters and people whom disagreed were usually Christian. some would twist words and pretend what they did was acceptable. The South used it as a shield, stating they didn't sin. The African American churches provided liberation and encouraged survival.
