This painting done by Van Gough, depicts an old man sitting alone by the fire, crying into his hands. The horizontal lines of the fire place and the diagonal liens of the man's arms make his covered face the focal point of the picture. There is texture in his pants and in the floor made by lines. The picture is symmetrical with a main focus point in the middle and some negative space on both sides. You can guess the man is a farmer of some sort because of the plain clothes he wears, and that he has been through hard times because he is sad. I believe that this painting is supposed to portray that this man has been through so much, and is trying to decide whether he should continue on in life or not.
