This photograph by Dorthea Lange was taken to show people a side of the depression in California. The focal point is on the mother, but then your eye travels to her kids on either side of her. The photo is asymmetrical because the woman's children's are at different heights next to her, and she is clearly bigger in proportion than them. There are harsh lines in the woman's face which show you that she has been through hardships. The shadows and grim on their faces show the living conditions have been bad and there has not been much food on the table. I believe that this picture communicates strength because the mother of these children is doing everything she can to keep her family alive.
