Secretion of bile

Bile

- 1500 mLs of bile are secreted every day
- secreted continuously by the hepatocytes of the
liver
- plays an important role in fat digestion and
absorption
- initially bile fluid has about the same electrolyte
concentration of interstitial fluid
- contains Bile salts, an emulsifying agent
neccessary for the digestion and absorption of fats

1. they help to emulsify the large fat particles of the food into many minute particles
2. aid in absorption of the digested fat end products through the intestinal mucosal
membrane

- serves as a means for excretion of several important waste products from the blood
- includes , an end product of hemoglobin destruction, and excesses of
cholesterol
