By the mid 19th century, thousands of Americans with different beliefs came together to battle with social problems in their nation. They mainly focused on schools institutions, like asylums and prisons. Prisoners were physically punished and also isolated from other people for a long periods of time. They had bad living conditions and were also combined with the mentally insane patients.
