Author's Idea

The author put the topic of misjudging others in this book for a reason and she has her own opinions on misjudging others. I think Wendelin Van Draanen has the opinion that you should not misjudge others just because of their facade. Proof of this is when Bryce's dad and his grandfather have an argument based on how the Bakers appear compared to the reality. Bryce's dad claims,"They're trash." while Bryce's grandfather introduces,"They're good hardworking people." The reason she put this topic in there is to show that it is easy to misjudge others, but that you need to look through the fog and see what is really there. It is important because it is what creates the main characters ideas and opinions. It is the root of the conflict and gives off a possible theme to the novel. According to an interview from writerswrite.com, the author claims,"I think people learn how to look beneath the surface too late in life. I know I did. And thankfully, I figured things out before I made any irreversible mistakes. But still, looking back on it, it took too long. I had tremendous crushes on people just for their appearance, which is all too common occurrence. I wish I had a book like Flipped around when I was growing up. I think it would have helped me develop an ability to see people for who they really are, rather than the surface." This proves the author chose this topic for what was guessed in my inferences and also possibly hints that she wrote it to let out a personal experience but give it a sense of a happily ever after.
