Bryce's Dad Misjudging Juli's Family
Throughout the book, Bryce's dad in specific had judged Juli's family just because of appearance. Though Bryce's family thought the eggs Juli had been giving them had salmonella altogether just because of the poor condition of her yard , Bryce's dad went up and beyond his family's opinions. The main instance showing this is an argument between him and Bryce's grandfather,Chet. Bryce's dad, Rick, starts the argument by claiming "that girl" (Juli) is working Chet too hard and complains at how he does not spend time with Bryce. Bryce comes in to try to calm down the argument but his dad just uses his words to create a larger argument. Bryce's dad shows an image of the Baker's being financially unstable by claiming," They're trash, that's why. They have a beat-up house, two beat-up cars, and a beat-up yard." Chet tries to explain the reality that Juli's family, the Bakers, are kind, hardworking people but Rick cuts him off claiming they have no pride in their appearance. Chet slams him with the reality that Juli's father has a mentally handicapped brother who they use their money for to make sure he is fine. Rick does not care about this and laughs,"Well, that explains a lot, doesn't it! Must run in the family." This insult shows Bryce's dad's true nature and his judgemental personality. He even says,".... I refuse it feel guilty for wanting—." His lack of showing guilt gives an even larger close up at who the Baker's are and who he is. His new opinions at the dinner party prove on to this by him accusing the Baker brothers," They're drug dealers is what they are....It's the only thing that makes sense, Patsy. Believe me, I know how musicians are. There is no other explanation for this." His behavior at a dinner party with the Bakers adds on with him making accusations during the dinner party ,suspiciously interrogating the Baker brothers ,and not accepting the truth right in front of him. There is also a small hint that his wife,Patsy, misjudged him according to this section,"For the first time in her life, Patsy is seeing her husband for what he really is."
