SKIN PREPARATION
•Skin contains an abundance of microorganisms.
– Microorganism entering body through operative site can cause infection.
•Impossible to sterilize skin.
– Chemical agents required are too strong for skin surfaces.
Cleansing the Site
•Cleaned with an antiseptic solution:
– Povidine-Iodine (Betadine Surgical Scrub)
– Chlorhexidine Gluconate (Hibiclens)
•Scrub site with surgical scrub using circular motion (moving Inside outward).
•Rinse using gauze pads saturated with water.
•Blotted dry with sterile gauze.
Antiseptic Application
•Antiseptic is applied to operative after pt’s skin has been shaved & cleansed, followed by applying a sterile drape.
•Antiseptic decreases # of microorganisms on skin.
•Betadine is the common antiseptic, Fenstrated Drape is commonly used.
•Fenstrated Drape: covers skin, leaving only operative site exposed.
Assisting With Minor Office Surgery
Shaving the Site
•Hair supports microorganism growth.
•It may be required to around operative site.
•Skin must be pulled taught as it is shaved, be careful to prevent nicks.
•Shaved area should be rinsed & dried.
