Types of Epithelia
Squamous cells are thin, they allow the passage of materials by diffusion and filtration. They line the blood vessels, heart, lungs, and lymphatic vessels; the lining of the ventral body cavity.
Simple cuboidal epithelia are square shaped with spherical nuclei, they allow secretion and absorption. they are found in the glands of kidneys, ducts and secretory portions of small glands and the surface of ovaries.
Simple columnar epithelia are multilayered tall cells with round oval nuclei and some secret mucus. These cells absorb and secret mucus, enzymes and other substances.they are located in the digestive tract, gallbladder, and some regions of the uterus.
Pseudostratified columnar epithelium are single layer of cells at differing height. They secret of mainly mucus by ciliary action. Mainly located in the upper respiratory, and the male sperm carrying gland.
Stratified squamous epithelium are thick membranes composed of several cell layers. They protect underlying tissues in areas subjected to abrasion. Located in the esophagus, mouth, and vagina.
