-One day, a white elephant appeared to his mother saying her son was to be a holy man
-Father tried to prevent this by making his son live in a palace and live in luxury
-He married at 16
-At age 29, he became aware of human suffering and meditated for one night. He woke up and found the solution of how to help the suffering. He became Buddah

Asoka
-Grandson of Chandragupta
-Buddhist
-Sent missionaries out to spread Buddhism
-Set up stone pillars for advice
-After the death of Asoka, the Mauryan empire declined
