Artist: unknown

Title: native tribal african ashanti stool

Date: 20th century

Medium: originally just wood, but painted white in recent times

Source: www,live auctioneers.com

Description: unique ashanti stool with various cutouts forming an 'X'

- some wear and chip to the paint

-approx 14 1/2 inches tall

Analysis part one

-line: not really any line on the piece, very plain

-shape: no actual shapes found on piece, but unique cut outs

-form:

   -geometric:rectangular base

   -organic: arched seat, 'x'

-color: bold white over entire piece, minus some chips

-constant bold shade of white throughout

   -intense but not overly

-texture: implies a relatively smooth feel besides paint chips and dents

-value: light neutral color

-space:

-positive: piece itself, so mostly positive

-negative: enclosed with negative space in gaps and cut outs

Analysis part two

-Balance: symmetrical

   - stool and base give it a sturdy feel

   - center beam is more stable than other pieces

-contrast: simplified, smooth base and seat v. Elaborate, unique design of center 'x' beam

-emphasis:contrasting design of x makes it the focal point

-movement: layout of piece draws eyes attention to x, arched seat points to it

-pattern: single color throughout with constant smoothness

  -not really pattern on it

-proportion: seat is slightly larger than base

-rhythm: symmetrical X with unique design provides a sense on movement

Unity: design and diversity of middle piece combined with the plain, smooth base and seat work together
