Interpretation

1. Line: diagonal, vertical, and horizontal line used throughout pattern covering the piece

-various shapes also used through the pattern

I think this piece contains many hidden meanings through its many intricacies. As a classic ashanti stool, I think it revolves around family, the nation itself, and the power of whoever holds it. It seems to be a symbol representing their people, almost like the patterns tell their storyAccording to legend, the stool controls the strength and unity of the ashanti people, and I think this piece expresses a sort of sacredness.

2. Combination of different shapes and line in an orderly pattern creates a sense of individualism and control

-able to be seen in my own expressive intent; ideas on my own control over my life as the possessor of it, individualism

Judgement

The intricacy of this work is very appealing and fascinating to me. The pattern seems to have so many hidden meanings but also seems open for viewers to interpret what they will. In this way, it's very involving and maintains viewers' attention. I think the artists has succeeded in creating a visually interesting work that displays the original ashanti ideas of the stool, tradition, nationalism, and the rule of its possessor. At the same time, I think it illustrates a unique, individualized feel, again emphasizing the control of the creator.
