Description: 

-traditional ashanti king's stool

-17 3/4 in tall, 25 1/2 in long, 14 1/4 in wide

-made of wood covered with hand hammered copper

-covered with various patterns 

-made up of several different shapes

- texture: implied that it's slightly rough due to continuous pattern 

-value: consistent throughout, neutral

-space;

  -positive: piece itself, mainly positive space

  -negative: enclosed with gaps and cut outs

Balance: symmetrical; rectangular structure in the center of the piece seems to keep it balanced

-base gives it a sturdy feel as well as the center oval structure not being fully round

Contrast: difference in shape; oval v. rectangular, rectangular V. arched

Emphasis: layout of piece puts emphasis on oval and vertical rectangle

-base and seat of the stool seem to highlight these two pieces as the center of the structure, the focal point

Movement: brings eye to center oval 

-oval surrounds rectangular beam 



Pattern: covers entire piece with varying shapes and line

Proportion: each individual piece of the stool varies in size

-seat in slightly larger than the base 

-size of oval balances out this difference

Rhythm: repetition of pattern creates a sense of rhythm and constant movement

Unity: pattern covering entire piece creates sense of unity.

-although each piece is a different shape, there is an overall similarities in their formation and roundness
