The Temperance Movement was a movement to legalize alcoholic beverages. Alcohol was used as a pain relieving drug that doctors gave their patients. However, it was noticed by many people that the consumption of alcohol in the USA was a problem. Various groups and societies were formed in an effort to lower the consumption of alcohol.
