The Second Great Awakening
They didn't believe in predetermined salvation, they emphasized everybody's individual responsibility that determined if they would go to heaven or hell. Also, large gatherings were held that could bring in up to 20,000 people. These gatherings were called revivals. Revivals are emotional meetings designed to awaken religious faith through impassioned preaching and prayer. Also, Christianity attracted African Americans because they believed that both blacks and whites belong to the same god.
