Pro-Slavery Arguments
Proslavery supporters used the Bible to defend their reasoning for slavery. By the 1830's white ministers in the south concluded that slavery and Christianity could coexist. Abolitionists wanted to end slavery so they decided to start petitions and attempted to pass laws in Washington DC. However, the south struck back with the adoption of the gag rule. This means that they could not petition or debate the issue. The Abolitionists later turned to violence to help their cause. As this became the early stages of a divided nation.
