Experiences of WWI

Lance Corporal George Ramage was a British soldier whom recorded his experiences he had on the western front. He kept a diary during his time at war and it is considered one of the most vivid account of what life was like at war for a soldier. This is a excerpt from his diary and it depicts his arrival in France on April 13, 1915.

"A pipe band and a brass band preceded us … Dense, appreciative, slightly demonstrative crowds … Sweethearts galore broke the ranks and their own hearts. Flinty hearted sergeants however heaved them back to the crowd again like so many inanimate sandbags."
