Roosevelt's New Deal
After destroying Herbert Hoover in the 1932 presidential election, Franklin Delano Roosevelt worked on creating a plan to end the Great Depression. His plan was called the New Deal and it focused on providing relief, reform, and recovery. During the period that became known as the First Hundred Days, Congress passed more than 15 major pieces of New Deal legislation which expanded the federal government’s role in the nation’s economy. However, with the New Deal also came strong opinions. Disagreements over the New Deal brought criticism regarding the NIRA, the SEC, deficit spending, nationalization of banks, and the country's debt from the Supreme Court, the business community, the Republican Party, Father Charles E Coughlin, and Huey Long.
