Like Styron, Gray also got a was able to get a good education. His mother paid for him to go to Eton College.

Though his education was extensive, he had an abusive father who, one time, almost killed him.

He wrote the official documentary of Nat Turners slave rebellion.

Because he was writing from an unbiased standpoint, he was able to document, true facts of this rebellion. He used narration to wrote this novel.
