Line is one of the elements of design. It is important just like the rest of them are. Line determines the outer shape of a garment. Aspects of lines in a garment include where it goes, how thin or thick, the sharpness, and the length. Lines can be straight or curved. Lines make the eyes move around the garment going up and down, side to side, and all around. Lines can be incorporated in patterns or part of the design of the garment. Lines in a garment can also trick the eye into thinking that a person is actually slimmer than they are or make a person look wider than they actually are.The effects of line depends in how many times it is used, where it is, and if it is symmetrical or asymmetrical.

Line

The images to the left displays the concept of line with the stripes on the dress. People used to say vertical lines make a person appear thinner and that horizontal lines makes a person appear wider but a recent study shoes that it's actually the opposite and the horizontal lines makes a person appear thinner and taller and vertical lines make a person appear wider because of where the stripes cut off on the hips emphasizing them.
