People were divided in their opinions of slavery in California. Many slave owning southerns who had come to CA in the 1849 gold rush and brought their slaves with them were in favor of slavery, however northern abolitionists and American miners were against it.

I think the runaway slaves were very courageous and brave to leave such a horrible situation, even though they knew the risks of getting caught.

Southern newspapers had fugitive slave ads. These were also recorded in a book, "American Slavery As It Is: Testimony of a Thousand Witnesses", published in 1839, by Theodore Weld that recorded the brutality of slavery. Editorial in newspapers offered insight into southern views on politics. These were used by northern abolitionists to effectively portray the brutality of slavery and embarrass and shame the pro-slavery movement
