Abraham Lincoln appealed to the American People, especially the North with his great skills in giving public speeches, the prime example being the historic Gettysburg Address of 1863.

People" ratified the constitution, so stated did not have the right to withdraw form the union. On the other hand, the South believed the states were more committed to protecting the property rights (slaves) than a centers listed federal governments.
