No education was available to slaves. Small schools existed with several grade levels taught in the same room, with the teachers dictating the educational practices and running of the school. There were also academies that taught children between the age of 13 to 20 that offered various classes including sciences and languages, in which boys and girls were separated. Families had to pay for this education.
