Life under Slavery-Urban and Rural Slavery

Rural Slavery:
-On large plantations, men, women, and children worked all day in the fields and was beaten if not working fast enough
-1850: most slaves lived on the plantations and had at least ten slaves living togehter. Small farms had their slaves working with their owner.
-Other slaves worked in the cities and lived there

Urban Slavery:
-1830: Cotton wealth attracted many whites to begin farming, causing slaves to be forced to work at mills and on ships.
-Depending on the skill of the slave, they had different classes of their own.
-Women and Children worked the same jobs as men in Southern industries
-Racial Discrimination occurred everywhere no matter what
