Pro-Slavery Arguments

-Bible used to defend slavery: counseled servants must obey their masters
-Christian ministers and Southern owners argued that it benefited blacks because they could be part of their religion
-South created the myth of a happy slave, in order to try to persuade the North into agreeing with them
-Because of the outbreak of petitioning for emancipation, Congress created the gag rule, which took away the citizens right to be heard
-The gag rule was repealed 12 years later
