INDUS RIVER VALLEY CIVILIZATION

Economy

Agriculture- People living in the Indus River valley areas mainly cultivated wheat and barley. They also grew rye, peas, cotton, and rice. The ancient people domesticate animals for a great source of food.

Trade- Trade was a very important part of economy. A uniform system of weights and measures greatly aided trade. Merchants traded as far as Sumer. This contact with outside people and cultures inspired the people of the Indus River Valley to develop their own written language. This language, to this day, has yet to be deciphered.

Buildings, Structure & Architecture

🔹People built granaries for storing surplus crops and houses were made out of brick.
🔹Plumbing was very common in homes and the streets had sewers.
🔹Used citadels, fortified areas, for defense.
🔹Each city had a temple.

Government

The Indus civilization had a very strong central government. The cities were seemingly well planned out. Historians have no evidence that kings ruled over the cities so it is very difficult to tell how the government was structured.
