The first ruler of the Maurya Empire
Chandragupta Maurya
Chandragupta Maurya ruled his empire very harshly. The government of his empire was a bureaucracy, or a large complex organization composed of appointed officials. Strict laws were enforced and punishments were inflicted on anyone that was against him. He collected taxes and built roads and harbors that aided trade to other civilizations. Chandragupta had a secret police because he was very insecure. At all times, he feared being assassinated. To avoid assassination, Chandragupta slept in different beds each night and had a food taster.
