CASTE SYSTEM

The Caste System is a system of placing people in ranked groups that is an aspect of the Hindu religion. The groups that people are put in dictate which occupations they are allowed to pursue.

Brahman: Priests

Kshatriya: Warriors

Vaishya: merchants, landowners

Sudra: Commoners, servants, peasants

Castes are very rigid and difficult to move from. People from different castes do not marry each other.

Dalits/Untouchables: latrine cleaners, street sweepers

Caste: noun \ˈkast also ˈkäst\:
one of the classes into which the Hindu people of India were traditionally divided

Since 1950, discrimination against the Dalit group has been outlawed. K. R. Narayanan was the first Dalit to take presidential office in India.
