Asoka, unlike his great grandfather was rather peaceful. He went against his brutal methods. Asoka turned to Buddhism hoping to rule by being an example for the people. He practiced religious tolerance and sent missionaries to spread the word of Buddhism.

Chandragupta ruled very harshly. Secret police were in place to report any corruption or disloyalty. The punishments were harsh and many people were put to death. He feared being assassinated so he had people to test his food to see if it was poisonous, he also slept in a different room every night so nobody would know where he was. He also collected taxes, build roads and harbors that encouraged trade.
