Charles Summer was a senator who gave a speech called "The Crime against Kansas" which infuriated Brooks who took his cane and started to beat Summer with it causing brain damage and other injuries to Summer. Brooks became known as Bully Brooks and some historians believe this to be the first blows of the Civil War.
