Storming of Fort Sumter
The issue of divided Union came to a head over the matter of federal forts in the South, the most important fort was Fort Sumter, in Charleston harbor and all the choices presented to Lincoln of Fort Sumter were all bad. If no supplies were forthcoming, its commander would have to surrender without firing a shot. So Lincoln notified the South Carolinians that an expedition would be set to provision the fort though not reinforce it but the South still saw it as reinforcement. And the South took the fort without spilling any blood. But the assault on Fort Sumter provoked the North to a fighting , Lincoln was now waging war.
