Fugitive Slave Act
Henry Clay compromised this
Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 came about after America gained some new land in the West. So many people flocked to California enough that it could try for statehood. Well before that even was close to happening, Texas which had become a free republic wanted protection from Mexico so it applied for statehood with America. So the problem was that Texas wanted to be slave state but Congress didn't know what to do with California since it was above and below the line set up previously by the Missouri Compromise. So Henry Clay came up with this decision that California shall be a free state and Texas would be slave. But there were three other points in this such as the Slave Trade was banished from Washington, DC and also this idea of Popular Sov. which meant the people could decide the future of the state and a tougher Fugitive Slave Act was put in place.
