Election of 1860

The Election of 1860 was virtually two election: one in the North, the other in the South. The Republican platform had a seductive appeal for just about every important nonsouthern group: for the free-soilers, nonextension of slavery; for the northern manufacturers, a proctective tariff; for immigrants, no abridgment of rights; for the Northwest, a pacific railroad; for the West, internal improvements at federal expense; and for the farmers, free homesteads from the public domain. SOuthern secessionitsts promptly served notice that the election of Lincoln would split the Union. It was Abraham Lincoln who elected and South Carolinians found this their excuse to secede.
