I was told that Eleanor reads on about a 5th grade level. Some measurements had been assessed when I first discussed the assignment with my placement teacher. Their district utilizes the DARS rating system which assesses reader capabilities according to these attributes :

Print awareness, Phonological awareness, Letters and sounds, Word recognition, Word analysis, Oral reading accuracy and fluency, Silent reading comprehension, Spelling, Word meaning

What I learned about Eleanor's comprehension skills in reading...

The DRA is a great tool, but it is just one piece of information about our readers (Sibberson, pg. 58). It gave me a starting point to help me pick the books. Beyond that her survey answers told me that she had a few strategies for when she got stuck on a word. She felt she needed more practice in talking about what she reads so that people "can feel what she feels". I had researched all of the book's Lexile scores and compared them to the books she told me she was currently reading. I chose books at the same or slightly higher reading level.
