Back in May of 2013, the Cheerios Company released a new commercial to promote their product. This commercial tells the short story of a young girl asking her mom about the benefits of Cheerios. The girl, then, goes to her father and pours Cheerios all over his heart to help with his help. Good story. Good actors. The "problem"? The family in this commercial consists of a black father, a white mother, and a mixed child. When this commercial first aired, it received over 5 million views on YouTube along with plenty of hateful remarks and racist comments. Apparently, it got so bad that Cheerios had to disable the comments section on the video.
Why should it matter what color the father is, or what color the mother is, or if the child is mixed? That's not the whole point of the commercial. The point is to show how Cheerios are good for your heart and how one child takes it a little too seriously. Color is not the main thing in this Cheerios commercial. Family is the main thing.
