XYZ Affair- U.S. tried to negotiate peace with France to stop attacking American ships. France said no, but they tried to bribe us by giving them money. The U.S. was outraged and avoided war but built up a navy. (Pic 1)

Alien and sedition acts- The alien act made it difficult to become a citizen. The sedition act made it illegal to print negative stories against the government. Democratic republicans gained support after violation of 1st amendment. (Pic 2)

Jay's treaty- This treaty sought to settle outstanding issues between Britain and America. The American public didn't like this treaty, but it did accomplish the goal of maintaining peace between the two nations.

Opinionated- Adams always spoke out about what he believed in and he wasn't afraid to say what he thought.
